ABOUT AUGSBURG

Augsburg is the second oldest city in Germany founded between the Lech and Wertach rivers over 2000 years ago by Roman troops. Today you will find several signs of ancient Rome in our city and also feel the flair from the south. The wealthy Augsburg merchants not only imported the spirit of the Italian Renaissance, but also brought Italy’s architecture to the Lech. The Renaissance city hall, the Maximilianstraße, splendid fountains, the Fuggerei and the Damenhof (Ladies’ courtyard) are still today impressive reminders of this "golden Augsburg of the Renaissance".

Points of interest:

  • Town Hall and Golden Hall
The Rathaus, or Town hall, was built between 1615 and 1620 to become one of the most important secular Renaissance structures north of the Alps. In World War II it was severly damaged but on occasion of Augsburg’s 2000-year jubilee in 1985 the Golden Hall with its imposing portals, gold-leaf cofferd ceilings and murals was extensively restored.

  • Fuggerei
The Fuggerei is known as the “Town within a Town”. It was founded in 1516 by Jakob Fugger the Rich as the world’s first social settlement for hardworking, honest but impoverished citizens who were Catholic. The settlement comprises 147 appartments and a church and still keeps its social fundamental idea. The yearly rent, to this day, is one Rhinish Gulden – about EUR 0,88. Part of the house rules is the daily recitation of The Lord’s Prayer for the founders.

  • Cathedral
The earliest records for the history of the cathedral (Dom) are from 823 AD. The windows of the prophets Jonas, Daniel, Hosea und Moses are examples of the oldest representative stained glass in Germany built in the middle of the 12th century. In front of the cathedral you find relicts from Roman Augsburg (Roman wall).
